Community First New Westminster would like to congratulate Kathleen Carlsen, the New Westminster Progressive candidate who won today’s school board by-election.

“While it was not the result we wanted, we respect that the residents of New Westminster have spoken,” said Nancy Kato, chair of Community First New Westminster. “We’re extremely proud of what Jalen Bachra was able to accomplish, and we will be working hard with the community to continue the good work of our party.”

Community First executive members, elected representatives, campaign volunteers, and Jalen’s friends and family gathered Saturday night to celebrate and acknowledge everyone’s hard work on the campaign. Jalen gave a heartfelt and emotional speech, thanking his supporters and volunteers.

“I knew coming into this it was going to be a battle,” said the 21-year-old first-time candidate. “I care a lot about the community. I think we need young people on school board to give that students’ perspective.”

Maya Russell, School Board Chair, said Jalen ran an incredibly thoughtful and principled campaign.

“He inspired voters, he brought in new voters, he inspired the Queensborough community. This is a young leader with a long career ahead of him, and we hope it’s in New Westminster.,” she said. “Despite having an incredible candidate, we understand voters were disappointed and hurt by the actions that lead to this by-election.”

Mayor Patrick Johnstone echoed her comments.

“Jalen did everything a candidate should do. We thank him for making us all proud," he said.

Community First New Westminster also acknowledges and thanks the two independent candidates: Shawn Sorensen and Alejandro Diaz.
