Community grants boosted - Community First

New West puts community groups first through enhanced grants program

In a report at the Feb. 23 City Council meeting, staff provided details on more than $1.4 Million in grants for sports, arts, economic development, social services and cultural organizations serving New West as part of the enhanced program for 2026. This means better festivals, more access to youth sports, and artists being able to do their work here in in community.

A total of 71 community partners were awarded grants under the categories of Community Livability and Social Equity, Social and Cultural Vibrancy, and Community Economic Activators, with an increase of 39% over the amount granted in 2025.

“Local business, tourism and arts organizations tell us when the City invests in Community Grants, it returns three to ten times the amount to residents and business in New Westminster” said Councillor Ruby Campbell, Chair of the Arts Culture and Economic Development Advisory Committee. “These are the organizations that bring community together and connect us all as neighbours.”

As part of the 2026 budget, Community First councillors supported increasing grant envelope over 2025, recognizing that costs for community partners have increased in recent years, as has the community's desire for programming.

The City’s Community Services department also outlined refinements to the community partnership model, including developing mentorship and education programs specifically for community organizations. This included ongoing networking support such as the recent “Love New West” event at Anvil Centre, where 2025 grant recipients gathered to share experiences and opportunities for collaboration.
