The report is in.
In 2023, this Council set five clear priorities for New West. This week, city staff delivered the final report on our progress, and here's what those five priorities delivered.
Community belonging: A 2-acre Pier Park expansion opening this summer. Community grants up 50%, now $1.4 million a year for local groups. $34 million invested in renewing the Massey Theatre.
Housing: More than 5,000 new homes over the past decade, including secured rentals at Uptown West, PAL seniors’ housing, and Móytel Lalém. $11.6 million in federal Housing Accelerator funding secured. Rents dropping for the first time in decades.
Economy: One of the lowest commercial vacancy rates in the region. A record 55 film shoots, bringing in over $1 million in permits. Business growth outpacing population growth.
Safe movement: More than $12 million from the Growing Communities Fund put toward safety. Violent crime severity down 23.3%, the lowest since 2018. A multi-agency Vision Zero approach to safer roads.
Getting it done: Our new təməsew̓txʷ aquatic centre delivered within roughly 5% of budget. Capital planning extended from five years to ten. More than $124 million in senior-government funding brought home.
The report is candid about the work still ahead, too. But the direction is clear: set priorities, follow through, and things get done.
We’re proud of this record, and we’re not done yet. This October, vote Community First.
